Founder and Head Coach, Austin Fencing Academy

Andrei Kuryshka

Master of Foil | Student of Legends | International FIE Referee

Fencing is often called “physical chess,” but for Andrei Kuryshka, it is a lifelong pursuit of excellence that began at the age of six in Brest, Belarus. With 32 years of experience on the strip and 14 years leading national and international programs, Andrei has dedicated his life to the art and science of the foil. Today, as the founder of Austin Fencing Academy, he brings a world-class pedigree to Central Texas, shaping the next generation of American fencers through a blend of disciplined European tradition and modern competitive strategy.

A Legacy of Championship Excellence

Andrei’s competitive career was marked by early brilliance and sustained international success. At just 16 years old, he won his first Senior National Championship in Belarus, signaling his arrival as a top-tier athlete. From 2006 to 2012, Andrei was a mainstay of the Belarusian National Team, representing his country annually at:

  • World Championships

  • European Championships

  • World Cups

His resume includes finalist finishes at the Junior and U23 European Championships and numerous podiums at international tournaments. One of his proudest milestones was leading the Belarusian foil team to victories over global powerhouses, including France, Germany, and the United States.

Forged by Greatness

The foundation of Andrei’s coaching philosophy was built under the guidance of a true icon: Alexander Romankov, the Olympic Champion and ten-time World Champion. As Romankov’s student, Andrei didn’t just master the mechanics of the sport; he inherited a deep, nuanced vision of fencing that he now passes on to his own students – a vision where technique meets intuition.

From the National Team to the American Top Tier

Andrei began his transition to coaching in 2012, quickly rising to become the Head Coach of the Belarusian National Cadet Foil Team. Working within the elite Olympic reserve system, he mentored athletes to medals at the European and National levels.

In 2018, Andrei brought his expertise to the United States, where he honed his craft at the nation’s most prestigious institutions:

  • Academy of Fencing Masters (AFM): The largest fencing club in the U.S.

  • Silicon Valley Fencing Center: The #1-ranked foil club in the country.

During his tenure on the West Coast, Andrei’s students became a dominant force. Under his guidance, athletes secured Championship titles and podium finishes at the Summer Nationals, as well as gold medals across Regional and Super Regional circuits.

A Unique Perspective: The Referee’s Lens

Andrei is one of the few elite coaches who also serves as an International FIE Referee. Having officiated final bouts at the World and European Championships, he possesses an “insider’s” understanding of how modern fencing is judged at the highest level. He uses this “referee’s lens” to teach his athletes the subtle nuances of right-of-way, tactical presentation, and the realities of high-stakes international officiating.

Coaching Philosophy & Mission

At Austin Fencing Academy, Andrei believes that while results are the goal, character is the foundation. His philosophy is built on three pillars: Discipline, Consistency, and the Process.

“If you are willing to work hard and commit to the process, you can achieve far more than you ever imagined. Fencing isn’t just my profession; it is my passion. My goal is to create an environment where every athlete feels supported, challenged, and guided with the highest level of expertise.”

Andrei values the partnership between coach, athlete, and family. Through open communication and patient mentorship, he ensures that every fencer – from the beginner to the national contender – finds their path to improvement and excellence.
