What Our Fencers Say

Hear real stories from our fencing community about their experience training at Austin Fencing Academy

Coach Andrei brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing competitive foil fencers at various skill levels. What sets him apart is his holistic training philosophy, he strategically balances technical mastery with psychological resilience. He doesn’t just teach the mechanics of a parry or a thrust; he builds the mental fortitude required for high-level competition. This patient, insightful approach has earned him deep respect and loyalty from his students.

My son, Maxwell, had trained under Coach Andrei for four years at Silicon Valley Fencing Center. During this time, the coaching has been deeply personalized, tailored specifically to Maxwell’s physical strengths and temperament. Under Andrei’s guidance, Maxwell has made steady technical progress and, more importantly, has built significant confidence on the strip.

As a parent, I truly value the positive and professional relationship Coach Andrei establishes with his students. He creates an environment where young athletes feel challenged yet supported. I give Coach Andrei my highest recommendation for any parent or program looking for a dedicated, expert coach for their fencers.

Maxwell / Age 15
Our daughter Ariya (now 14) began her fencing journey with Andrei and established a strong fencing foundation – achieving a B rating in 2.5 years. Her success is a reflection of Andrei’s coaching and guidance. We were very sad to see him leave our club.

Andrei is a dedicated & passionate coach and would be a great asset for any fencer.
Ariya / Age 14

Coach Andrei was the coach who introduced Gloria to fencing. Under his guidance, Gloria has shown consistent improvement in her fencing skills, focus, and confidence. Coach Andrei is patient, detail-oriented, and knows how to challenge students while still making training positive and motivating. What we appreciate most is his ability to build a strong technical foundation while also encouraging good habits and a love for the sport. Gloria truly enjoys every lesson, and we are grateful for his dedication and support.

Gloria / Age 11

Coach Andrei has been George’s fencing coach for the past year, and we truly could not have asked for a better coach. We loved working with him. In practice, he was always extremely patient, taking the time to explain drills and techniques clearly to George. On the competition floor, his coaching was full of passion, energy, and belief.
One moment that really stayed with us was during Summer Nationals last year, when Coach Andrei told George, “Don’t rush to get angry. You will become stronger. You just need time.” That message meant so much to him.
Another unforgettable moment was at the Austin SYC. George had a terrible pool round and was under so much pressure that he was standing there crying and even wanted to withdraw from the tournament. Coach Andrei pulled him aside, talked him through his emotions, and helped him reset mentally. After that, George went into DEs and fought all the way to the Top 8 — something we will always remember.
Over this past year with Coach Andrei, George has grown tremendously — not only in fencing technique and tactical understanding, but also in mental strength and confidence. Coach Andrei gave him constant support, encouragement, and belief, and that made a huge difference for both George and our family. We are deeply grateful for everything he has done.

Yunze Li / Age 10

Mia trained with Andrei for three years and had a very positive experience. He made fencing fun and engaging while also teaching important values like discipline, respect, and perseverance. Andrei has a wonderful way of encouraging kids to try their best, learn from mistakes, and build confidence both on and off the strip.

Mia loved training with Andrei. He pushed her to fence with sharper technique, smarter tactics, and stronger focus during bouts. Andrei knows how to set high expectations while keeping kids motivated and confident, which made a real difference when Mia competed.

We’re extremely grateful for Andrei’s coaching and would highly and would happily recommend him to any family.

Mia / Age 11

Our child Miya trained with Andrei previously, and his coaching left a lasting impact. After Andrei moved away, our child did not take any private lessons with other coaches. At the end of the year, she competed in her very first regional fencing tournament.

In the Y8 category with 21 competitors, she won two bouts and finished 15th overall. We were very proud of this result, especially considering she was only 7.5 years old and this was her first competition.

We truly believe this outcome reflects the solid technical foundation, discipline, and confidence Andrei helped build during their time together. His teaching was clear, patient, and focused on fundamentals, which continued to benefit our child even months after training ended.

We are very grateful for Andrei’s guidance and highly recommend him to families looking for a coach who genuinely develops young fencers, not just short term results.

Miya / Age 7

Coach Andrei has been an extraordinary part of my child’s fencing journey from day one. He didn’t just teach her techniques; he helped her understand what fencing feels like, such as the excitement, the nerves, the small wins, the friendships, and the joy of learning through practices and tournaments.

In her second and third years, I saw a shift from simply participating to discovering who she is as a young fencer. Coach Andrei listened carefully to her questions and guided her growth with patience and intention. What I value most is how he helps her recognize her own strengths and motivates her to apply them in each bout.

Hayley / Age 13

Coach Andrei is the most passionate coach I have ever met. He truly loves fencing and strives to pass that love on to his students. My son likes him very much; he is friendly, humble, and professional, and has coached many young fencers to win medals. If your child loves fencing and wants to learn from a professional coach who shares that passion, coach Andrei is an excellent choice.

Kimi / Age 13

Our daughter Yingying trained with Coach Andrei between the ages of 7 and 8. He was her very first fencing coach and also her first private instructor. Coach Andrei is extremely patient with beginners and has a great ability to build confidence while teaching strong fundamentals.

He is very responsive and thoughtful when communicating with parents, always addressing questions and concerns in a timely manner. In the year leading up to our daughter’s Y8 competitions, he helped her build a strong technical foundation that continues to support her development today.

We are truly grateful that our daughter’s first fencing coach was Andrei and highly recommend him to families looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable coach for young fencers.

Yingying / Age 7 to 8

My son has been training with Andrei since he started fencing at the age of 7. Andrei has always been very caring and patient with him. Coach Andrei is also very approachable and open to fencing related questions from his students.

With my daughter, Andrei helped coach her to medal at local, regional, and national tournaments.

We have had nothing but great experiences with Coach Andrei and highly recommend him.

Cameron and Addison Ho / Age 12 & 15

Coach Andrei was our first fencing coach. Sophia loved her lessons with Coach Andrei. He is a highly experienced professional who is confident in his teaching, patient, supportive, and excellent with kids.

Sophia Khlestov / Age 7

Julianne started her fencing journey at the age of 9. One of the most important parts of this journey is having an amazing coach who is not only skilled but also inspires students to reach their fullest potential.

Andrei was her first coach. He taught her techniques, strategies, provided feedback, and explained rules. His words of encouragement, support, and expertise made fencing a fun and positive learning experience. He is the true definition of a great coach.
